Cards Defeat Defiance as Dowd Wins 500th Match
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - After losses to Gettysburg College (9-0) and Mount Union (8-1), the CUA men’s tennis team defeated Defiance College of Ohio 6-3 during their spring break tournament in South Carolina.
“We didn’t have a single practice day in February because of the snow,” says head Coach Marty Dowd, “but we improved every day.”
The win over Defiance was Coach Dowd’s 500th victory in his 47th season with the Cardinals, making him the coach with the most wins in CUA history- by a landslide.
“No one is even close to 500 wins, but what they don’t tell you is I’ve also got 333 losses,” Dowd laughs. “That, too, is the most in CUA history.”
Jean Paul Roman, a sophomore from Puerto Rico, won the deciding point at the #3 singles (1-6, 6-4, 10-8) after dropping the first set with his opponent. Dan Valverde, Mike Schinella, Joe Gribbin, and Rubin Tian had all won earlier in straight sets.
“The kids were under amazing pressure,” said Dowd, “They couldn't sleep the night before because they were all trying to get me my 500th. I told them not to worry about it.”
Former players Walt Weggeser and Jim Shaeffer were at the match, as well as many supportive CUA parents. Also in attendance were Dowd’s three children, Jennifer, Michael, and Dana.
“There were so many wonderful young men that were responsible for these 500 wins. I just feel very blessed,” Dowd noted. “Now let’s go get the next 500!”
