Men's Tennis Takes Two on Saturday
WASHINGTON-- CUA men's tennis team played its second and third matches of the season on Saturday, defeating Hood College 7-2 before traveling to Shenandoah and sweeping the Hornets, 9-0.
In the opening match, the Cardinals took on Hood College. Daniel Valverde opened what would be a great day with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 1 singles over Carter Reitman. Connor Donnelly and Michael Reaney also swept their opening opponents in singles. CUA's lone loss, not caused by forfeit, was in the top doubles match as Bernardo Nogales and Valverde fell 8-1 to Mike Hardman and Reitman.
After dropping Hood, CUA jumped back on the bus and continued their one-day road trip to Shenandoah to take on the Hornets. The Cardinals swept the double competition 8-1, 8-3, and 8-1 with Nogales/Valverde taking the top doubles while Michael Schinella/Reaney took the No. 2 spot and Donnelly/ Rubin Tian won in the third spot.
In a highly anticipated top match Shendandoah's Michael Milanov, with a serve that has been clocked in the mid-120's, took on Daniel Valverde. Valverde, after winning his earlier singles match and also feeling under the weather, took Milanov 6-2, 6-0 and is now 3-0 at the No. 1 singles spot.
CUA will return to action on Sept. 26 at 12 p.m. as the Cardinals will travel to St. Mary's (Md.). The team then will travel to McDaniel College on Sept. 27 before concluding its fall schedule with an Oct. 10 match against Div. I Loyola (Md.).
