Men's Tennis Grabs Two and Improves to 5-0


WASHINGTON-- The CUA men's tennis team had an outstanding weekend kicking it off with a 5-4 win over St. Mary's and completing the weekend sweep with a 7-2 victory over McDaniel.

On Saturday, the Cardinals faced off against the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland and emerged victorious.  Daniel Valverde defeated Thomas Hoesman 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles slot. Bernardo Nogales and Michael Schinella conquered their opponents as well in the singles competition. The top two doubles matches, played by Schinella along with Nogales, and Valverde accompanied by his partner Michael Reaney, put two more matches under Catholic's belt.

Sunday was no exception to the stellar weekend had by the team with Catholic's triumph over McDaniel. Valverde kept his squeaky clean record polished as he swept Dan Hovorka 6-0, 6-0 to remain undefeated for this fall. CUA trampled McDaniel in the doubles competition, winning every match played. Valverde and Nogales made an unstoppable team and can be seen in action this weekend at the ITA individual championships being held at Mary-Washington.

CUA will return to a ction in its last match of the fall on Oct. 10 against Div. I Loyola. Coach Marty Dowd will enter this match with 499 career coaching victories.
