CUA falls to defending champion Drew 8-1 at home
WASHINGTON – CUA had its hands full with three-time defending Landmark Conference champion Drew on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to the Rangers 8-1. Joe Gribbin earned CUA's lone win on the day, posting a victory at sixth singles.
Raul Smego was victorious at first singles over CUA's Bernardo Nogales by a 6-4, 7-5 count before the Cardinals' Cassian Utrie fell to Alex Belfiore 6-4, 6-3 at the second flight.
Joe Peters was upended at third singles 6-1, 6-1 and Brian Bradley gave Adam Gerber all he could handle at the fourth flight, but eventually fell 5-7, 6-4, 10-7.
At the fifth flight Elliot Smego earned a 6-4, 5-7, 10-2 win over CUA's Kyle Kramer and at the sixth flight Gribbin got the Cardinals on the board with a win over Matt Imbo.
In doubles play Raul Smego and Elliot Smego emerged victorious over Utrie and Peters 8-1 at the first flight, while at the second flight Belfiore and Matt Brisotti earned an 8-1 victory over Nogales and Jean Paul Roman.
Gerber and Imbo then closed things out with an 8-6 win over Kramer and Jason Quisberth at third doubles.
The Cardinals get right back to action on Sunday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. match at York in Pennsylvania.
