CUA cruises to 7-2 win over Dubuque at home
WASHINGTON – Behind five singles wins the CUA men's tennis team downed Dubuque 7-2 on Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals (6-3) received singles wins from Cassian Utrie, Joe Peters, Brian Bradley, Kyle Kramer and Joe Gribbin. Bernardo Nogales and Jean Paul Roman, along with Kramer and Jason Quisberth earned wins in doubles competition.
Nogales fell to Nick Garcia 6-0, 6-3 at first singles, but that was the lone loss CUA would suffer with Utrie beginning the run of five straight wins at the second flight. He took down Demetrius Johnson 6-1, 6-3 to tie the match at one and Peters followed with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Michael Braden at the third flight.
Bradley earned a 6-5, 7-5 win at fourth singles, Kramer upended Shawn Iben 6-2, 6-1 at the fifth flight and Gribbin closed things out with a 6-0, 6-2 win at sixth singles.
In doubles action Garcia and Iben earned an 8-5 win in a tight match with Utrie and Peters at the first flight, but CUA rebounded to win the next two matches. Nogales and Roman picked up an 8-1 win at the second flight and Kramer and Quisberth finished things off with an 8-4 win at the third flight.
CUA will now begin Landmark Conference play when the Cardinals travel to Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
