Cardinals Open Outdoor Season at Battleground Relays

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University track & field teams opened up the 2014 outdoor season at the University of Mary Washington's Battleground Relays on March 21-22.

On the men's side, the 1600 Sprint Medley team of John Brewer, Greg Daley, Chris Derks, and Kevin Drummond had the best finish for the Cardinals, placing second with a time of 3:50.69.

In the Distance Medley Relay, Derks teamed up with Collin Roszyk, Michael Taylor, and Michael Wood for a third place finish ahead of the second CUA team of John Brewer, Michael Kvartunas, Robert Leeson, and Gordon Pisani, in fourth.

The Cardinals had another strong finish in the 4x400 relay, as Marzouka, Christopher Papp, Pisani, and Roszyk placed fourth, crossing the line in 3:36.99.

The Lady Cardinals took home one first place finish thanks to the 4x100 relay team of Maria Dextra Cercos, Emily Curato, Madeline Hotz, and Catherine Kitz finishing in 52.23.

In the 4x200 relay, Maria Docal, Jane Marrinan, Kristen Rayfield, and Mary Paige Nesfeder ran a 2:12.45 time, good for second place. Susana Molina, Rebecca Radcliffe, Tali Peretti, and Erin Schlegel combined to run a 4:15.13 time in the 4x400 relay, earning the Cardinals another second place finish.

Cercos ran a 1:14.21 time to finish third in the 400 meter hurdles, while Candace Williamson finished sixth with a time of 1:20.48.

For the field events, Megan Ross earn two top-3 finishes. She threw a 32.96 attempt in the discus to take home second, ahead of Nesfeder who posted a 32.72 effort for third.

Ross took home third place in the shot put with a 11.16m toss, while Mary Clark finished fourth with a 11.01 throw.

Christine Burias cleared the bar at 2.74 meters in the Pole Vault for a second place performance.

Both Catholic squads return to action when they travel to Towson, Md. for the Goucher College Invitational on Saturday, March 29.
