Indoor track championships set for this weekend in Pa.
WASHINGTON – The CUA track and field teams head to Selinsgrove, Pa. this weekend to compete at the 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track Championships. Action from the campus of Susquehanna University gets underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The CUA men have competed five times this indoor season, most recently at the Dickinson Invitational on February 19. Kian Olia posted the top individual finish for the Cardinals, crossing in third place in the 5000 with a time of 17:03.94. Joe Quigley placed fifth in the 55 hurdles and later registered a fourth place finish in the 400.
Overall the Cardinals registered 29 team points to place tenth in the 19-team field.
The week prior CUA headed to Massachusetts to compete at the MIT Invite where the Cardinals notched four first place finishes. Michael Kennedy won the 600, Matt Zemba took first in the 400 and the 4x400 relay team and distance medley relay team both won their respective events.
At last year's championship CUA placed fifth with 24 points. Moravian captured the men's title by registering 215 points.
On the women's side Kelly Carioto won the shot put last weekend at Dickinson, with a throw of 38' ¼" to help the Cardinals finish 11th out of 20 schools. Freshman Ali Nelson placed fourth in the 55 with a time of 7.81, and she also registered a sixth place finish in the 200.
On February 12 CUA took part in the very competitive Vince Brown Invite on the campus of Christopher Newport University where the Cardinals saw a number of athletes from Division I schools.
Camelia Mayfield was the top track finisher as she crossed in sixth place in the 5000 with a time of 19:12.60 and Carioto also placed sixth, with a throw of 39' 1 ¾" in the shot put.
The CUA women came in fourth at last year's championship with 51 points, while Moravian took the crown after the Greyhounds totaled 210 points.
The indoor championships are a one-day event with action beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning from Susquehanna.
