Kent Thompson is in his second season as Catholic University's
Head Men's Cross Country and Track and Field Coach. He came
to CUA from nearby American University, where he had served as the
Assistant Cross Country and Track Coach for 10 years.
During his first season with the Cardinals, Thompson guided the
cross country team to a first place finish at the season-opening
Albright College Invitational, led by Mike Puskar's second place
showing. The Cardinals' top finisher at the Landmark
Conference championship was then-freshman Dylan Jones, showing
great promise for the future of the program.
Track season saw Shawn Brubaker earn All-Conference accolades at
the indoor championship with a second place finish in the weight
throw, while three relay teams earned fourth place finishes to add
to CUA's point total. Two more Cardinals, Joe Quigley and
Pete Schramm, received All-Conference honors at the outdoor
championships, and 10 student-athletes posted top-ten finishes
overall. Quigley also qualified for the ECAC outdoor
championship, which took place in Albany, N.Y.
In the classroom, 15 of Thompson's student-athletes were named to
the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll, and two received
All-Academic Team laurels.
During Thompson's time at American, the Eagles coaching staff
earned Patriot League cross country coaching staff of the year
honors in 2002 and 2003 and the team won back-to-back league titles
in those same seasons.
Thompson helped guide numerous student-athletes to league
championships as well as all-american, all-region and all-league
recognition. In the classroom, a number of student-athletes
received academic honors, including the league Scholar Athlete of
the Year, academic honor roll distinction and academic all-district
laurels.
Among his many duties at American, Thompson helped develop and
supervise the training programs for the cross country and track
teams, and he assisted with scheduling, recruiting and academic
monitoring.
In addition to his coaching duties, Thompson has served as a
Special Education Teacher and is currently a Case Manager with
Bridge Services at Winston Churchill High School where he works
with students with autism spectrum disorders and emotional
disabilities.
Thompson earned his bachelor's degree from Colby College in
Waterville, Maine, where he was a four-year member of the school's
cross country and track programs, and earned all-NESCAC and all-New
England honors.
