Softball Splits With Mary Washington
Early runs get win in second game

3/19/2008

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. - The Catholic University softball team (7-5) split in a doubleheader with the University of Mary Washington Eagles (14-9) Wednesday afternoon in Virginia.  This was the third meeting between the two teams putting the series at 1-2.

The Cardinal offense struggled in the first game with just two hits while the Eagles managed nine.  UMW scored a run in the first inning off of an error to make it 1-0.  After two silent innings from both squads, the Eagles got hot and scored a quick seven runs in the final three innings while CUA could get nothing going at the plate.  A double, a homer and a long single proved to be the nail in the coffin as the Cards fell 8-0 in six innings.

The Cardinals turned it around in the second game with three quick runs to start the contest.  Kelly Lukacs (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) stole second and advanced on a pass ball before crossing the plate thanks to a single from Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel).  Kerri Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) hit her home with a double to center field and then scored on Lynn Brown's (Laurel, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) ground out.  In the second inning, CUA added one more as the offense methodically took Betsy McNulty (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) around the bases to make it 3-0.  The offense slowed down after that but the defense managed to allow just three UMW runs and held on for the 4-3 victory.

Ager led CUA with three hits in the game as well as two RBI while Convery had two and an RBI.  The Cards out hit Mary Washington 8-3 but had three fielding errors to their UMW's one.  On the mound, Stacie Goddard (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) was awarded the win with the complete game and eight strikeouts.

The Cardinals will host Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference game tomorrow at 3 p.m.
