Cardinals Drops Two in Landmark Play
CUA will look to rebound versus Scranton

4/12/2008

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University softball squad dropped a pair of games to the Moravian College Greyhounds (21-5, 6-0 Landmark) Saturday in Pennsylvania.  In two Landmark Conference match-ups, CUA lost the first 7-3 and the second 14-3 in five innings. With the losses, the Cards drop to 11-13 overall and 3-3 in the Landmark Conference.

Moravian managed a run in the opening inning but the first game didn't really get going until the fourth.  In the top of the inning, the Cardinals scored three runs.  Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) led off with a single up the middle, she was brought home by Stacie Goddard (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) who had a double to left center.  With two runners on, Kara Walker (New Milford, N.J./Holy Angels) reached on an error as both runners crossed the plate to make it 3-1.  Unfortunately, Moravian answered with four runs of their own including a homer to take the lead and keep it.  The Cardinals would manage no runs in their final three at bats and eventually fall 7-3.

Lynn Brown (Laurel, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) led CUA at the plate going 2-2 with one run scored.  The Cards had just one less hit that the Greyhounds but committed two more errors. Goddard took the loss the complete game with five strikeouts.

The Cardinals once again looked to be in good shape in the second game as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a trio of runs in the top of the first.  Ager reached after getting hit by the pitch and Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) moved her to second on a hit to left center.  Brown then came up and smashed a homer to left center to give CUA the lead. Unfortunately, from that point on things didn't go CUA's way as the team had no more than four batters in the each of the four remaining innings.  Moravian, on the other hand, rallied for seven runs in the first inning, four in the second and three in the third to end it in five 14-3.

CUA was outmatched in every way with six hits to their 12 and one error while Moravian had none.  Steph Clemente (Warren, N.J./Immaculata) took the loss in the circle pitching the first two innings.

The Cardinals will look to rebound on Sunday as they host Scranton in another Landmark Conference match-up which is being made up from a rainout last weekend.  The first game will begin at noon.
