Cardinals selected second in Landmark Conference preseason poll
WASHINGTON – CUA has been selected second in this year's Landmark Conference preseason poll, announced on Thursday. The Cardinals won 23 games a season ago, and advanced to the conference championship game.
CUA collected 53 points in the poll, which places the Cardinals behind defending champion Moravian, which totaled 66 points and every first place vote. Following the Greyhounds and Cardinals are Susquehanna (51 points), Scranton (40 points), Drew (29 points), Juniata (23 points) and Merchant Marine Academy (11 points).
The Cardinals return all four of their All-Conference performers from a season ago, including First Team selections Megan Rizzi and Taylor Stockinger, as well as Tracey Scanlon and Erin McMakin.
Rizzi also earned All-Region honors after leading the Cardinals with a .395 batting average, to go along with 45 hits, 31 runs, 35 RBIs, 14 doubles, 4 home runs and 73 total bases.
CUA brings back six of its top seven hitters from 2011, in addition to its top two pitchers in McMakin and Kerri Apicella.
CUA is currently hard at work in practice, with an eye towards its annual spring break trip in early March. The Cardinals will begin their 2012 season on Monday, March 5 when they face Bluffton and Bridgewater at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Start times for the games are 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
