Cardinals head to Florida to compete in the Rebel Spring Games

WASHINGTON - The CUA softball team will start its 12th season under Head Coach Bruce McConkey on Monday in Kissimmee, Florida when the Cards compete in the Rebel Spring Games.

McConkey led the Cardinals to their second ECAC championship last season and their second 25-win season in the last three years. CUA also earned its fourth Landmark Conference Tournament bid in the last five seasons.

The Cardinals return eleven players, including All-Landmark Conference Second Team selections Rose Shaver, Taylor Stockinger, and Amy Laughner.

In the pitching circle for the Cardinals will be returners Kerri Apicella and Victoria Capozucca, and they are joined this season by Tori Marcavage and Kim Giurlando.

Apicella finished the 2012 season with a 2.96 ERA and 77 strikeouts. Marcavage, who transferred from Division II Kutztown University, appeared in 10 games for the Golden Bears, finishing with a 1.60 ERA and 29 strikeouts, including one shutout.

McConkey also welcomed in a large and skilled group of newcomers, many of whom will have a chance to contribute from the start.

The Cardinals will start their spring break trip on Monday against Muskingum and Illinois College.

CUA begins the Landmark Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday, March 23 with a trip to Pennsylvania to face Juniata.
