ASHLAND, Va. - The Cardinals dropped a doubleheader to Randolph-Macon on Friday afternoon, falling 6-5 in the opener and 8-4 in the second game. Despite the setback, sophomore Amy Laughner went five-for-eight at the plate and Tori Marcavage hit her first homerun in a Cardinals uniform.
In game one, Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Sharese Jarvis homered to right center.
CUA's Marcavage hit her first homerun of the season to tie the game at one in the top of the second.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead back in the bottom of the second. Jenna Best walked and later scored after a single by Amanda Sopko and a Cardinal throwing error, to put Randolph-Macon up 2-1.
The Cardinals took the lead in the third after scoring four runs off three hits. Laughner started things off with a single to center field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Rose Shaver.
Taylor Stockinger then reached first on a Yellow Jacket error and Laughner was able to score. Mel Galella got on with a single to left and Marcavage's single plated Stockinger and moved Galella into scoring position. Galella and Marcavage later scored off two more errors to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
With two outs in the third, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs off a couple of singles and a RBI double to cut the Cardinals lead to one.
In the sixth, Madison Gillman doubled to left center to plate two to give the Yellow Jackets the win 6-5.
Marcavage suffered the loss for the Cardinals after giving up five earned runs and walking five.
Heather Lewis captured the win for the Yellow Jackets after giving up only one earned run and striking out two in seven innings.
In game two, CUA scored early in the first with Stockinger doubling to center field to score Laughner to make it 1-0.
With two outs in the third, Gilman doubled to left, and she was plated by a homerun from Best to put Randolph-Macon up 2-1.
In the fourth, Randolph-Macon added four more runs to go up 6-1. Sopko led off with a single and was brought around by Simon's double to center field. Lewis then hit a single to right to score Simon from second, and another double by Jarvis scored two.
The Yellow Jackets pushed two more runs across in the fifth to increase their lead to 8-1.
The Cardinals continued to hang on and were able to cut the deficit in half with three runs in the sixth. Laughner doubled to lead things off and Shaver followed with an RBI double to center field. Marcavage then knocked in one more for the Cardinals.
The Yellow Jackets shutdown three CUA batters in the seventh however, to win the game 8-4.
Kristen Dize earned the win for Randolph-Macon after pitching 5.2 innings and giving up four earned runs and striking out one. Victoria Capozucca suffered the loss for the Cardinals after going 3.2 innings and giving up six earned runs.
The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they open Landmark Conference play on the road against Juniata. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. with the second game immediately following.
