CRESAPTOWN, Md. – The Cardinals split a doubleheader against Frostburg State on Thursday with the Bobcats winning the first game 5-1, while in the nightcap, the Cardinals earned a dramatic 9-8 win in nine innings. Amy Laughner went 5-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs in the second game.
In game one, the Bobcats struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second. Megan Butzner doubled to right center and Lauren Capece walked. Both were brought around on Kerri O'Malley's homerun over the center field wall to give Frostburg the advantage, 3-0.
Caitlin Lovend and Renay Abuel both homered in the third inning to increase the Bobcats lead to 5-0.
CUA finally got on the board in the fourth when Taylor Stockinger hit her third homerun of the season, but the damage was done and the Bobcats shutdown the Cardinals in the next three innings to win the game 5-1.
Tori Marcavage suffered the loss for the Cardinals after giving up five runs in two innings. Mary Ann Moore captured the win for Frostburg after pitching seven innings and giving up one earned run while striking out four.
The Cardinals started the second game off with one run in the first inning. Laughner reached first base on a Bobcat fielding error and was later plated off a single to left field by Stockinger.
Frostburg tied the game at one in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Lovend walked and advanced to third on a double by Aubel. Shari Beavers then singled through the right side to score the run.
The Bobcats were able to retire CUA's first two batters in the top of the second, but the Cardinals hit four singles to score three runs to take the lead, 4-1.
In the fifth, Frostburg tied the game at four off four hits and one CUA error. Lovend singled through the left side and advanced to third off a double by Beavers. Butzner reached first on a Cardinal error and Lovend scored.
Taylor Blevins then singled to center field to score the second run of the inning and O'Malley hit an RBI single to left field to tie the game at four.
The Cardinals answered with four runs in the sixth. Nina Curto singled through the left side to plate two and Marcavage singled to the right side to score the last two runs to give CUA the lead, 8-4.
The Bobcats managed to hit five singles in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at eight and force the game into extra innings.
Courtney Burke scored the winning run in the top of the ninth off a single to right center by Laughner.
Kerri Apicella earned the win for the Cardinals after pitching two innings and striking out six. Moore suffered the loss for the Bobcats after giving up one run in three innings.
CUA will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 when they play host to Landmark Conference foe Drew. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. with the second game beginning at 3 p.m.
