CUA Softball Predicted to Finish Third

Full Landmark Release

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University softball team has been predicted to finish third in the Landmark this season, according to the coaches preseason poll released on Tuesday, Feb 25.

CUA finished with 33 points, as Susquehanna, who are the 2013 defending champions topped the poll with 54 points and four first place votes, while Moravian came in second place with 51 points and three first place votes.  Moravian leads the conference in championships titles by winning seven of the last eight (2008-12) conference titles.

The Cardinals (20-21, 5-5) head coach Bruce McConkey welcomed a group of 10 newcomers to an already talented team which includes three Second Team All-Landmark performers from a year ago including Rose Shaver, Amy Laughner, and Tori Marcavage. The Cardinals have a tough non-conference schedule as McConkey hopes it will prepare his team for conference competition. The Cardinals are looking to capture their first ever Landmark crown.

Catholic opens the season with the two-day Beach Blast Tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan.  On Friday, Feb. 28, CUA takes on Christopher Newport at 11 a.m. and Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. and concludes the tournament on Saturday, March 1 with Eastern Mennonite at 10 a.m. and Wilkes at 4 p.m.

The top four teams in the final regular season standings qualify for postseason play in the Landmark Conference Tournament. The top seed will host a double elimination tournament Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3. The conference champion will earn the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
