WASHINGTON – The CUA softball team opened the 2014 season at .500 with wins against Centenary (N.J.), 11-3 and Allegheny, 2-1 during Roanoke College's Beach Blast in the Mountains on March 1-2 in Salem, Va.
The Cardinals fell 8-0 to Kean and 14-2 to Eastern Mennonite.
In CUA's opening win against Centenary, the mighty black and red notched 11 hits over the opponent's eight hits and initiated the run rule when Centenary only mustered two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Laughner tallied a triple in the top of the first providing the leverage to score on Rose Shaver's single.
Catholic went on to score three runs in the top of the second and the third, and notch a contest high four runs on the top of the fourth.
The Cardinals second win of the weekend took place on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Allegheny. CUA scored single runs in the bottom of the first and the seventh.
In the bottom of the first, Laughner reached home plate first and put the Cards on the board. Catholic closed out the contest in the bottom of the seventh with a single run by Christianne Taney, who came in as the pinch runner for Shaver.
Catholic hosts the first contest of the season on Wednesday, March 5 by hosting Mary Washington in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
