WASHINGTON – Kristina Lozupone and Amy Laughner led the afternoon with out of the park homeruns during the Cardinals doubleheader home opener against the Hornets of Shenandoah on the CUA Softball Field.
The Cards opened the two-game event with a 12-4 win. With the Hornets up 4-0, CUA took the lead on five runs in the bottom third. In the lead changing inning, Lozupone tallied the first grand slam of the season scoring Laughner, Rebekah Hoisl and Monica Peters. Lozupone obtained her fourth RBI when she doubled to left field to score Laughner in the fourth. CUA clinched the win with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Kerri Apicella pitched the entire game, striking out four Hornets. Lozupone finished the game with one run, two hits and four RBIs, while Laughner notched three runs, three hits and one RBI.
Catholic concluded the afternoon with a 2-1 win. The Cards tallied one run in the bottom of the third and fourth inning. Laughner whacked one over the fence for her first homerun of the year. For the 2-0 lead, Hoisl singled down left line scoring Tori Marcavage.
Shenandoah registered a run in the top of the seventh to avoid a shutout.
Laughner led the offense with one run, one hit and one RBI, as Victoria Capozucca pitched all seven innings.
CUA returns home to welcome Landmark Conference opponent Juniata on Saturday, March 29 with the first game starting at 1:00 p.m.
