WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America softball team split doubleheader action with the Stevenson Mustangs, as the Cardinals captured the game one victory 1-0 before capping the evening with a game two 6-5 loss.
During game one, CUA recorded the game winning run in the bottom of the first, after which both teams remained scoreless over the remaining six innings.
Victoria Capozucca earned the win for the Cards, as she faced 26 batters in her seven innings on the mound. Capozucca gave up no runs, five hits and struck out four.
CUA started game two with a 3-0 lead by the first inning. Laughner scored on a sacrifice fly by Erin Adams. Christy Sanchez notched two RBIs when she singled to left field, scoring Shaver and Lozupone.
On a fielder's choice, Laughner scored, as Adams reached first base and Shaver was tagged out heading on to third base for 4-0 lead.
The Mustangs answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the contest 4-4.
Stevenson seized the win with two runs in the top of the fifth for a final score of 6-5.
Catholic looks to utilize home-field advantage when they host two conference doubleheaders: Susquehanna on Saturday, April 5 (1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.) and Juniata on Sunday, April 6 (1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.).
