WASHINGTON – On a late start during the opening game and a single run in the second game of the doubleheader, the Catholic University softball suffered their first home conference losses of the season on Saturday against Landmark Conference defending champions Susquehanna.
CUA dropped a 5-3 decision after game one and a 3-1 loss after game two.
The Crusaders opened the twin bill with two runs in the top of the first. After two scoreless innings, SU extended the lead to 5-0 on two homeruns.
CUA concluded the contest with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Monica Peters reached home from third base when Lozupone slugged a hit to right field.
Victoria Capozucca recorded the loss when she gave up seven hits, five runs and one strikeout against 18 batters.
Susquehanna once again took a 2-0 lead by the end of the first inning during game two.
Catholic answered back with a run in the bottom of the second. Peters helped Christy Sanchez reach home plate when she grounded out to the shortstop.
CUA held SU to a single run in the top of the fourth, as both teams remained scoreless to conclude the contest.
Kerri Apicella pitched a complete game for the Cards, facing 28 batters to allow another seven hits, three runs and five strikes.
The Cards return home on Sunday, April 6 to host Landmark Conference foes Juniata in 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
