WASHINGTON – It was a great day to be a bird at the CUA Softball Field, as the Catholic University of America softball overpowered the Bobcats 4-3 and 6-11 to wrap up the regular season.
Prior to the doubleheader, head coach Bruce McConkey honored the five student-athletes of his senior class.
In both contest, the Cardinals came from behind for the win.
During the opening contest, Catholic scored single runs in the bottom of the first and seventh, and two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Victoria Capozucca seized the 15th win of the season with three strikeouts, while only permitting three runs and walking two batters.
Catholic began game two with a slower start, as Frostburg State took a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. CUA cut the margin lead to 6-5 with three runs on the fourth. The Cards went on tie the game with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and finally secured the lead with four runs in the seventh.
The mighty red and black out hit FSU 18-9 in the win, with Christy Sanchez leading the birds with four hits, followed by Kerri Apicella and Amy Laughnher recording three runs apiece. Lozupone, Sanchez and Kylie Finley each notched two RBIs.
With a record of 20-13 overall and 7-5 in the conference, the Cardinals head to No. 1 seeded Susquehanna to battle No. 2 Moravian on Friday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. for the 2014 Landmark Conference Tournament.
