Catholic Falls to No. 5 Christopher Newport In NCAA Regional Opener

WASHINGTON – In their first opening round appearance in the NCAA Regionals, the Catholic University of America softball team dropped a 6-1 decision in Virginia Beach, Va., on Friday, May 9 to No. 5 Christopher Newport.  With the loss, CUA drops to 23-14 on the year.

Victoria Capozucca suffered the loss to drop to 17-4 on the season.  She allowed six runs on 13 hits and one walks. CNU's Krista Lewis earned the win, as she allowed one run on five hits and two walks.  Makayla Jenkins threw the final inning for CNU striking out two and walking one.

Erin Adams drove in CUA's lone run with a single up the middle to score Amy Laughner.  Laughner, Adams, Morgan Gieser, Courtney Burke, and Monica Peters each picked up a hit for the Cardinals.

CNU took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, followed by CUA's single run in the top of the fourth.  The Virginia-based foes extended their lead and clinched the win with a single run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the sixth.

From the bag, Adams stopped four runners from advancing to home plate, while Laughner, Peters and Tori Marcavage putout three runners apiece. 

The College of Staten Island and No. 9 Virginia Wesleyan followed Catholic's matchup against Christopher Newport.  The Cardinals will face the loser of that contest on Saturday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m.
