WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America softball team came back for a 3-2 extra innings win over Muhlenberg at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., on Thursday. Rookie outfielder Marissa Wimmer came through with the game-winning sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
The Cardinals (7-3 overall) rode the momentum to its second win of the day and fourth straight, as they defeated Concordia (Ill.), 5-3.
Against Muhlenberg, the Cards trailed by on in the sixth, but junior centerfielder Rachel Valdes doubled to leftfield to score senior Molly MacNeill as the game went to extras after a scoreless seventh.
Both teams got on the board in the eighth, but Catholic's defense stood strong in the ninth to set up Wimmer's clutch fly.
Sophomore Kelly Lynch went for the baseball complete game as she went nine strong innings and allowed just one earned run and struck out five batters.
In the follow-up, Catholic had six players register hits and scored in each of the final four innings for the win.
Rookie pitching duo Claire Sturek and Sabrina Scott got in done for the Cards as Sturek got the start and the win with nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings and just one run, while Scott came on for the save.
Catholic gets a day off after four games in two days before wrapping up the 2017 PFX Spring Games against Roger Williams and Ohio Northern on Saturday.
