Bethlehem, Pa. – The Catholic University of America softball team opened the Landmark Conference Tournament with a victory as the Cardinals downed Susquehanna, 8-2. Catholic was topped by No. 1 Moravian, 6-2, and moves on to day two and game five of the tourney tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The Cards trailed No. 2 Susquehanna 1-0 after two innings but got a RBI single senior Julie Keleti to tie it up. Catholic then posted a three-run fifth to take control. Senior Erin Adams blasted a two-run double and junior Rachel Valdes followed with a RBI single.
Catholic piled it on in the seventh as Valdes hit a sacrifice fly and was followed by classmate Alyssa Keane who hit a three-run home run for the 8-2 win.
Sophomore pitcher Kelly Lynch went for the complete game as she allowed just two runs and scattered eight hits with two shutouts.
Catholic got on the board first against Moravian as Adams singled in sophomore Rebecca Marks.
Moravian answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame and got two home runs from Kat Spilman to take a 4-1 lead.
Catholic got one back on a sac fly from Marks but Moravian answered with another home run in the fifth.
The Cards now have a rematch against Susquehanna tomorrow morning with the winner moving on to play Moravian in the Championship round.
