Trotta Voted Academic All-America
Junior center fielder Jennifer Trotta (Millersville, Md. / Institute of Notre Dame) has been selected to the 2000 GTE Academic All-America College Division District II Softball Team.
Trotta, a two-time first-team All-CAC honoree, led Catholic in batting average (.362), slugging percentage (.419), on-base percentage (.460), hits (38), runs (35), walks (19) and total bases (44). She led the CAC in stolen bases with 29 in 30 attempts. She added four doubles, a triple and five RBI for the Cardinals, who improved from 7-15 in 1999 to 16-19 this year.
Trotta, who is majoring in electrical engineering, has a 3.7 grade-point average.
To be nominated for Academic All-America, a player must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or significant reserve. The team, which is chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and sponsored by GTE, recognizes both academic and athletic achievement. District II includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Athletes named to the district team qualify for the national ballot, with that team announced June 8.
Quinn, Trotta Named All-Conference
Senior third baseman Jennifer Quinn (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and junior center fielder Jennifer Trotta (Millersville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) have been named first-team All-CAC in softball. No second team was selected.
Quinn, a second-team All-CAC selection in 1998, hit .323 this year with 16 RBI (second on the team), three doubles and 14 runs scored. She started all 35 games and was 8-for-8 on the basepaths. She will graduate with a degree in biology.
Trotta is a repeat first-team selection after leading Catholic University in batting average (.362), slugging percentage (.419), on-base percentage (.460), hits (38), runs (35), walks (19) and total bases (44). She led the CAC in stolen bases with 29 in 30 attempts. She added four doubles, a triple and five RBI for the Cardinals, who improved from 7-15 in 1999 to 16-19 this year.
Thoughts from Coach Ferington
To win a Capital Athletic Conference game at Mary Washington and a CAC Tournament game (against Gallaudet) in my first season at Catholic University made it a very successful year. The program grew immeasurably by the ladies learning what I expect out of student-athletes, but also by what it takes to be successful on the field. It is very easy to coach a group of ladies like we have here.
With the two pitchers coming in - Kristin Werdann and Kate Vincent - my biggest concern from last season was addressed. Our biggest challenge is going to find someone to replace third baseman and national second-team Academic All-American Christine Runfola.
The upperclassmen will have to lead until the younger players get adjusted to what we want.
Players
Jennifer Trotta, Junior CF - Had an outstanding season
last year. She realized what we wanted the second half of the
season and was just unbelievable.
Jennifer Quinn, Senior 1B/ 3B - Jen struggled a
little last season and missed all of the fall season with knee
problems. We really need her to play well. She will move to one of
the corners.
Meagan Schiavone, Junior C - I thought Meagan was
the most improved player on the team last season. She really grew
as a catcher and handled the pitchers well.
Sophomores Luisa Blanchfield, Caitlin
Gremminger, Eileen Horn and Beth
Arway will have to have solid seasons for us to be
successful.
One of the best things about our incoming freshmen is that they
are a versatile group.
Kristin Werdann, P/OF - Kristin is a very
effective pitcher. Not overpowering, but has good control and
command of her pitches. She runs very well and does a good job in
the outfield.
Kate Vincent, P - Kate is a powerful young lady
with a lot of potential. When she is on, she can flat-out throw the
ball.
Jessica Cisper, SS - She is the real deal at
shortstop. Great glove, good arm, can hit and run.
Amanda Greenwell, C/3B - Is another powerful young
lady. She has some pop in her bat. Needs to be come consistent at
the plate.
Erin Boerst, C/OF - Does a good job behind the
plate. Can also play outfield.
