TAKOMA PARK, Md. - Catholic cruised in the first game versus Columbia Union, 15-6, but stumbled and lost the second, 11-10, to split a non-league twinbill Sunday afternoon.
Game 1 featured a nine-run first inning for Catholic (12-12). Freshman Ellen Manning (Rockaway Twp., N.J./Morris Knolls) was 2-for-3 with 5 RBI and sophomore Jessica Payne (Portland, Maine/Portland), pictured, was 3-for-3 two runs scored and two runs knocked in as the game was stopped in the fifth.
Sophomore Kate Moshier (Hyde Park, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) picked up the win, going five innings, surrendering eight hits, six runs (three earned), while fanning four and walking just one.
In game 2, the Cardinals battled back from 6-0 and 9-3 deficits as Catholic used a four-run seventh to take a 10-9 lead. Columbia Union rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a fielding error and then score the game-winning run on an RBI single in the next at bat in the eighth.
Payne was a perfect 5-for-5 with 3 RBIs. Freshman Caryn Kata (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Beaumont) also knocked in three runs, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
Moshier came on in relief of starter Jessica Cisper (Lenexa, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) in the fifth but took the loss. She falls to 8-12 on the year.
Catholic awaits the pairings for the conference playoffs. Play starts on Wednesday.
