WASHINGTON - Catholic swept a conference doubleheader with York, 6-2 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon extending their win streak to five games. Junior Kristin Werdann (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) picked up the win in Game 1, going the distance in giving up just two runs and two hits. Sophomore Kate Moshier (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt) earned the win in the second game, also going seven innings while allowing two runs (one unearned) on just five hits.
In the first game, York (5-12, 0-2 CAC) jumped out on Werdann in the first inning, scoring two runs on just one hit and three walks but the junior settled down the rest of the way and did not allow a hit until the seventh. Freshman Kristen Cimino's big two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth locked the game up at 2-2.
The next inning, Werdann helped her cause out by singling in freshman Laura Cartagena from third to make it 3-2. Werdann would then score on an Ellen Manning sacrifice bunt and Moshier added an RBI single for some insurance runs in the fifth. For the game, Moshier was 2-for-3 as well as Cimino who was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
The second game saw Catholic get two runs in the sixth as Moshier's groundball to third was misplayed by York's Ashli Phillips allowing Manning and sophomore Jessica Payne (Portland, Maine/Portland) to score. Freshman Caryn Kata had two of the Cardinals' three hits.
Catholic (7-5, 2-0 CAC) returns to action on Wednesday with a CAC doubleheader with crosstown foe Gallaudet at the DuFour Center at 3 p.m.
