McConkey earns CAC Coach of the Year

4/24/2007

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America softball team had four players named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference squad the conference announced Tuesday.  Juniors Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel), Heather Holley (Owings, Md./Northern), Kara Walker (New Milford, N.J./Holy Angels) and sophomore Kelly Lukacs (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) were all selected to the at-large squad after leading the Cards to the tournament championship game before falling in nine innings on Sunday.  Head coach Bruce McConkey was also named the CAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his five-season tenure.

Ager is a three-year member of the all conference squad after earning at large her freshman year and first team last season.  She is fifth on the team in batting average with a .321 and 37 hits and her 28 RBI this season ranks her first on the squad. The first baseman has a .995 fielding percentage with 182 putouts.

Lukacs led the Cards at the plate hitting .413 with eight doubles, three homers and 21 RBI.  She ranked fifth overall in the conference in batting average and third in hits with 45, she was also 7-7 in stolen bases.  Earlier this season, she was named the CAC Athlete of the Week after going 10-18 in six games with eight RBI including the game winner over Mary Washington.  This is her second nod to the team after earning first team last season.

Walker is a two-year honoree after leading the Cardinal outfield since her freshman season and earning All-CAC that year.  This season she was second on the squad with a .350 batting average and 22 RBI.  She also had 28 hits, seven doubles and 28 putouts in the field for a .924 fielding percentage.

Holley is also being honored for the second time earning first team All-CAC last year.  She was fourth on the team in batting average with a .333 and posted team highs in doubles (12) and runs (28) this year.  The shortstop was also a strong defender with 52 putouts and 75 assists for the Cards.

This was the first honor for McConkey who led CUA to a 17-17 finish with two games remaining this year.  This is the most players he has ever had on the all-conference squad.  CUA will return all but two student-athletes next season as the team will enter into the newly-formed Landmark Conference.
