CUA beats York in the opening game
SALISBURY, Md.- The Catholic University third-seeded softball squad started out the Capital Athletic Conference tournament strong with a 4-1 victory over second-seeded York but ran into a tough Salisbury squad in the second game of the day and was eliminated from play after a 10-2 loss. With the split CUA stays at .500 at 16-16.
In the first game against York, Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) scored the first run of the tournament with a home run in the top of the inning to put CUA ahead, 1-0. The Spartans tied it up in the bottom of the sixth when the lead off hitter managed a double and was methodically moved around the bases.
In the top of the seventh, CUA had one last chance before the game would go into extra innings and the Cardinals answered. Kara Walker (New Milford, N.J./Holy Angels) led off with a double and Sophie Gage (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) was walked. Stephanie Clemente (Warren, N.J./Immaculata) took her base in the next at bat and a wild pitch scored pinch runner Megan Covert (Wilmington, Del./Concord). Rachel Baker (Riverdale, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) then came up and knocked a single to drive in pinch runner Abbie Rolando (Carlisle, Mass./Concord Carlisle Regional). Finally Clemente rounded out the scoring stealing home before the end of the inning. The Spartans couldn't make things happen going three an out for CUA to get the 4-1 victory.
Elyse Papianni (Brielle, N.J./Monasquan) got the win for the Cards with three strikeouts in the circle. Convery was 1-3 at the plate with one run and an RBI. Both teams had six hits and neither committed an error. The win placed CUA in a game against the top-seeded host Sea Gulls in the second contest of the day.
In the second game, Salisbury started out hot scoring three runs after to doubles in the inning. CUA managed one run in the third after Nicole Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa./CB East) hit a homer to make it 3-1. Unfortunately, the Sea Gulls went on a run in the fourth and fifth innings scoring two apiece making the score 7-1. Rachel Marrion (Los Altos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) crossed the plate in the top of the sixth off of an RBI from Kat Ager (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) but three more Salisbury runs in the bottom of the inning made it 10-2 ending the game.
Ager went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI for CUA which had six hits to Salisbury's eight in the game. The Cards also had three errors in the contest. Clemente took the loss for CUA in the circle after the start with Katie Ann Trotta (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Dominic) coming in to relieve.
