WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball squad ended the season on a high note Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Field.  The team shut out the Baruch Bearcats in both games of the senior day doubleheader.  CUA ends the season 19-17 with a 4-4 record in the Capital Athletic Conference.

The first game sped right by as the Cardinal defense allowed just four Bearcat base runners for the contest.  The CUA bats were also on target with two big innings to get the 14-0 victory in five.

The Cards score two runs in the first and then had Heather Holley (Owings, Md./Northern) make it around the bases in the third thanks to a number of Bearcat errors.  Later in the inning Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) launched a three-run homer.  The fourth inning was the nail in the coffin for Baruch as CUA hit pitch after pitch scoring four more before Holley hit a grand slam to make the final 14-0.

CUA dominated the contest with 13 hits to Baruch's three while Kelly Lukacs (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) went 3-3 and Holley was 3-4 at the plate.  Senior Elyse Papianni (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) got the win in the circle with the complete game and eight strikeouts.

The Cards handily won the second game as well but it took seven innings to get the 5-0 shut out.  Stephanie Clemente brought in two runners in the bottom of the third on a slice up the middle and Lukacs drove in one more to make it 3-0.  CUA score one in the fourth and one in the fifth to have the comfortable lead and eventual win at 5-0.

Betsy McNulty (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) was 3-3 for the game while Lukacs was 3-4 with two RBI.  Once again Papianni got the win in her final game as a Cardinal with four strikeouts.

The Cards posted one of their most successful seasons ever and will be building upon that next year.  The team with be losing starting third baseman Rachel Marrion (Los Altos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) as well as Papianni which will be major hits for CUA.
