Sea Gulls Take Cards in Two
CUA moves to even in conference play
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball team took two tough ones on the chin Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Field. The Cards dropped a pair of games to the Salisbury Sea Gulls 4-0 and 9-3. With the losses CUA fell to 11-15 for the year and 4-4 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Both teams were fairly quiet in the first game but the Sea Gulls managed to bring in one during the top of the first thanks to a long hit by Kelly Waskewicz. As the Cards continued to struggle offensively Salisbury brought in two in the fourth and one more in the fifth making the score 4-0 which would eventually by the final.
Neither team had a stellar offensive game as both tallied four hits apiece. Sea Gulls pitcher Stacy Davis got the win with six strikeouts in the complete game. CUA's Elyse Papianni (Brielle, N.J./Monasquan) also pitched seven and had six K's.
The second game started out much better for CUA as the team scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Looking at two outs, the Cards rallied as Kelly Lukacs (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) struck out for the third out but beat out the throw as the catcher dropped the ball. This play set up a two-RBI single by Kara Walker (New Milford, N.J./Holy Angels) to put CUA 2-0.
Unfortunately that would be the only spark the Cards would have as they gave up nine runs in the next five innings. Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough as CUA fell 9-3.
Walker led the squad going 3-3 at the plate with two RBI. Stephanie Clemente (Warren, N.J./Immaculata) was 2-3 as well. Again the two squads played a very similar game with both notching 10 hits. Clemente took the loss after pitching the complete game with four strikeouts.
The Cards will take a break before traveling to Randolph Macon next Wednesday for a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
