Softball Sweeps Scanton, 7-1, 15-3
WASHINGTON-- 22 runs and 25 hits helped lift CUA softball to a sweep over conference opponent Scranton Saturday.
Megan Rizzi (Mont Vernon/Souhegan High School) and Kerry Convery (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) led the way for CUA at the plate, accounting for six hits and eight RBIs. Stephanie Clemente (Warren, N.J./Immaculata) went the distance for CUA scattering six hits and allowing only one earned run. In game two Stacie Goddard (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) matched Clemente's performance going the distance and allowing only one earned run while striking out two while adding four RBIs and three runs scored in support of her own effort.
Game one started as a pitchers duel with Scranton accounting for the only run through the first four complete innings, but the top of the fifth allowed CUA to break out to a 5-1 lead to which they added two more insurance runs in the sixth.
Two pairs of hits bookended a walk, that combined with an error, accounted for the five runs in the fifth. Rizzi then added a two-run homerun in the sixth for insurance.
In game two, CUA broke out early with five runs in the second inning, and three in the third. It wasn't until Goddard's grandslam in the fifth and Convery's three-run homerun that put the game away for the Cardinals and allowed the game to end early due to the mercy rule.
CUA will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 5th at 2:00 p.m. as the Cardinals will make-up last week's rainout with Drew University.
