Cardinals Cruizes Past Mary Washington in Home Opener
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball squad (5-5) began its home schedule on the right foot with a pair of wins over Mary Washington (4-10) on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals blanked the Eagles 2-0 in the first game, and went on to win game two 6-1.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, where Lynn Brown’s single brought Mel Galella home. In the third inning, Megan Rizzi led off with a double before advancing to third on a passed ball. The sophomore then managed to steal home for CUA’s second run of the night. The Cardinals’ tough defense allowed only one hit in game one, as they finished with a 2-0 advantage.
Rizzi finished the game 1-2 with one run for CUA, while Brown was 1-2 with one RBI. The Cards had four hits in the win to Mary Washington’s one, and CUA also committed no errors to their opponent’s one. In the circle, Steph Clemente earned the win with two strikeouts and just one walk.
In game two, CUA came out and scored two quick runs in the bottom of the first inning. A single from Stacie Goddard drove Galella home to give the squad a 1-0 edge. Moments later, Rizzi stole both third base and home to put the Cardinals up 2-0. The team fed off their offensive momentum from the first inning and scored three runs in the second. Tracey Scanlon singled with bases loaded to score Samantha Daubman. A hit by Rizzi brought home Galella and Rachel Baker, and the inning ended with the Cards ahead by five. A double by Daubman scored Brown in the bottom of the third for the final CUA run of the night. The squad would allow the Eagles to score just once, as they soared to a 6-1 victory.
Galella finished 3-4 on the night, while Rizzi went 1-3 with two RBIs. Goddard was 2-4 with one RBI, as well as four strikeouts and two walks in the circle.
CUA will look to continue their winning ways on Thursday, March 18, as they travel to Mary Baldwin for a 3 p.m., contest.
