CUA Sweeps with Mary Baldwin
STAUNTON, Va.- The Catholic University softball team swept Mary Baldwin Thursday afternoon, beating the Fighting Squirrels by scores of 14-0 and 12-2. With the wins, CUA improves to 7-5 on the year. A combination of excellent pitching and tough defensive play in the outfield have been the team’s bread and butter, as CUA has given up just four runs in the last five games.
CUA opened up the scoring in the first inning, as Mel Galella, Megan Rizzi, and Lynn Brown all scored runs for the Cards. The team then rattled off a slew of scores in the second and third innings. CUA then exploded offensively in the fourth, scoring six of the teams’ 14 runs, and the game ended in five innings.
Rizzi was a dominant force for the Cardinals, going 2-3 and earning five RBIs, while Stephanie Clemente and Brown both went 2-2 with one RBI apiece. Clemente and Cecilia Ehresman combined for six strikeouts and one walk.
Game two was much of the same for the Cards, as they managed the first two runs of the contest in inning two. Convery scored off a left field single by Meagan Daubman, followed by a run by Nina Victoria Curto. Mary Baldwin scored its only two runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the second, but the Cardinals immediately answered with two additional runs in the fourth. CUA finished the game with a six-run performance in the sixth inning to give the Cards a decisive 10-2 victory.
M. Daubman finished the game as 4-2 with three RBIs, while teammate Curto went 3-4 with one RBI. Stacie Goddard finished the game with eight strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
CUA will return to action on Sunday, March 21st, as they host Randolph-Macon for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
