CUA Splits with Juniata in Conference Opener
WASHINGTON- Catholic University’s softball team split in a conference double-header against Juniata College Saturday afternoon, falling the Eagles by a score of 6-3, and then defeating the visitors 11-5. With the win, CUA nabs its first conference win of the season, improving to 14-6 overall.
Juniata struck first by notching the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, as J. O’Neill scored off a CUA error. The Eagles continued to roll by adding two additional runs in the fourth, but Catholic answered right back by tying the score with two runs of their own.
The Eagles sealed the 6-3 victory by tallying the final three runs of the afternoon, holding CUA to just one hit the remainder of the game.
In game two, the Cards had the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning when Katie Trotta hit a bloop single over second base, scoring Lynn Brown and Taylor Stockinger . CUA scored when Trotta was up in the third, as a fielder’s choice scored Brown once again. Megan Rizzi hit a triple with bases loaded moments later, scoring Samantha Daubman, Scanlon, and Rachel Baker to give the Cards a comfortable 8-0 lead. Juniata rattled off five runs in the top of the fifth, but Catholic responded with two runs of their own in the same inning. Taylor Stockinger blasted a home run in the sixth inning to seal CUA’s 11-5 victory.
