Softball Dominates Gwynedd-Mercy 5-1 and 10-0
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball team earned two wins against regional opponent Gwynedd-Mercy College Saturday afternoon, defeating the visiting Griffins 5-1 and 10-0. The Cards improve to 16- 6, while GMG drops to 10-1.
In game one, a Lynn Brown single scored Megan Rizzi to put the Cards up 1-0 in the first inning. Rizzi then drove home teammate Sam Daubman, and another Brown double scored Rizzi once again in the bottom of the third. After hitting a triple to open up the fifth, Rizzi ran home off a Stacie Goddard sacrifice fly. Kristen Trancynger hit another sacrifice fly to bring home Lynn Brown to seal the victory for the Cards.
Rizzi led Catholic by going 3-3 in game one with three runs, one RBI, and four put-outs. Brown also went 3-3 with one run, two RBIs, and 7 put-outs. Stephanie Clemente was the winning pitcher, allowing just four hits and three walks on the night.
CUA wasted no time in game two, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mel Gallella scored off a Daubman single, and a single by Taylor Stockinger drove home Goddard and Rizzi.
Kerry Convrey opened up the second inning with the squad's only home run of the night. CUA scored three additional runs on five hits to give the Cards a 7-0 lead. The home team secured the 10-0 victory in the bottom of the fourth with a three run effort.
CUA will return to action on March 30, as they travel to Salisbury for a double-header beginning at 3 p.m.
