Softball Takes Two at Drew, 4-1, 8-0
MADISON, N.J.- The Catholic University of America softball team (20-8) continued their winning ways with two victories against Drew University (17-7) Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals first defeated the Rangers 4-1, and then took game two in five innings, 8-0.
The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie for most of the afternoon, until the Cardinals hit their offensive stride in the top of the seventh inning. After Alyssa Corvino and Tracey Scanlon made their way to first and second base, respectively, Mel Galella doubled to left center to bring both runners home. Galella later scored on an error by the Ranger's catcher to give Catholic a 4-1 edge.
Right fielder Galella went 1-3 with one run and two RBIs in the win. Stephanie Clemente had another excellent night in the circle, allowing three hits and striking out eight batters.
CUA continued to roll in the nightcap, holding their opponent scoreless while rallying behind eight runs in five innings. Catholic scored six of their eight runs in a fifth-inning romp that proved to be too much for the Rangers to handle.
Leadoff hitter Tracey Scanlon went 1-3 at the plate, including a double that brought home two runners in the fifth. Stacie Goddard finished the night going 1-2 with two RBIs, and also gave up just two hits while striking out seven batters in the circle.
The Cardinals will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, April 11, as they head to Hood College for a double-header starting at 12 p.m.
