CUA Sweeps Hood, 8-2, 8-1
This Sunday The Catholic University of America softball team (22-8) came home with two non-conference wins over Hood College (15-15).
After a no hit first inning, the Cardinals scored the first run of the game after 3 hits and a RBI single from Sam Daubman. This was answered by a run from the Blazers through a rough defensive inning for the Cardinals. Over the next three innings the Catholic Cardinals took a five run lead with a series of hits and RBI’s, while holding the Hood Blazers to two hits and no runs. In the sixth inning, Kristen Trancynger had a RBI with a hit down the left field line. The Blazers made an attempt at a come back with three hits in the bottom of the sixth, but only gaining one run on the Cardinals. The Cardinals scored one more fun in the top of the seventh and Hood could not answer in the bottom. Catholic defeated Hood 8-2 in the first half of the Sunday double-header.
Mel Gallela went 3-5 in this game with 2 RBI’s and starting pitcher, senior Stephanie Clemente, gave up only 2 hits for the Cardinals.
In the second game, Catholic took the lead in the top of the first, off a double from Megan Rizzi. Catholic did not give up the lead for the entire game. Great pitching came from senior Cardinal Stacy Goddard, who only gave up one run and four hits the whole game. Although in the fifth inning Hood scored a run off a wild pitch, the Cardinals did big things in the sixth and seventh innings with seven hits and six runs. Catholic swept the Blazers with an 8-1 win in the second game.
Sophomore Megan Rizzi and freshman Mel Gallela combined for six of the Cardinals 13 hits in this game.
