Softball Splits with Scranton, 4-2, 6-3
WASHINGTON- Catholic University's softball team faced Landmark Conference foe Scranton University Saturday afternoon, splitting 1-1 with the Royals at their home field. CUA now stands at 4-4 in the conference, 23-9 overall.
Scranton University capitalized on a profitable fourth inning in game one, managing four hits and taking a 3-0 lead. CUA got on the board in the sixth as a Megan Rizzi triple brought home Alyssa Corvino. The Royals answered the next inning with one additional run to take a 4-1 lead. CUA's Taylor Stockinger led off with a home run to bring the Cards within two, but the squad was unable to rally from the deficit.
The Royals jumped out to another early lead in game two, but a stellar fifth inning performance helped propel the home team. Rizzi knocked a double down the left field line, scoring Tracy Scanlon and Mel Galella. Rizzi then reached home on an error by Scranton's short stop, and a Stockinger double brought in Isabelle Pisini. Stacie Goddard finished the offensive rally with a double to right center that scored Stockinger, giving CUA a 6-3 lead that would stand for the remainder of the game.
Rizzi finished the night going 3-for-5 from the plate with one run and four RBIs. Stacie Goddard had another strong night in the circle, giving up just three runs and striking out seven in the win.
CUA will continue their conference successes as they travel to Moravian on April 24 for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
