Softball Ousts Stevenson in Double-Header Action
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University softball team dominated Stevenson University in two games Wednesday afternoon, defeating the visiting Mustangs 7-1 and 6-1 in non-conference action. CUA now stands at 18-8 on the year, while Stevenson drops to 14-10.
Both teams remained relatively quiet until the Cardinals opened up the flood gates in the bottom of the third inning. A Lynn Brown single scored Mel Galella to give the Cards a 1-0 lead. Megan Rizzi then reached home plate on a Stevenson error, and a hit by Stacie Goddard brought in Taylor Stockinger and Brown. The Mustangs notched their only run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth, but CUA scored three more times to seal the 7-1 victory.
Rachel Baker and Goddard led the way for CUA's offense, each managing two RBIs on the afternoon. Brown and Kristen Trancynger combined for fourteen put-outs on the defensive end, while pitcher Stephanie Clemente tallied four strikeouts while allowing only four hits and one run.
The Cardinals wasted no time showing off their offensive flare in the night cap, scoring all six of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Stockinger double brought home Rizzi and Alyssa Corvino to put the Cards up early. Kerry Convery's single then scored Brown, and a Mustang error allowed Stockinger to nab the unearned run. Katie Trotta rounded out the offensive barrage with a single that scored Meg Daubman and Convery. Stevenson managed one run in the second game, but never threatened to take the lead, as CUA ran away with the 6-1 victory.
Stockinger and Trotta each tallied two RBIs in game two, each going 1-2 from the plate on the afternoon. Elizabeth Best chipped in five put-outs at first base, while pitcher Stacie Goddard gave up just two hits and struck out three batters in the circle.
CUA will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday, April 10, as they travel to Drew University for a conference double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
