Softball Sneaks Past USMMA
Kings Point, N.Y.- The Catholic University softball team picked up two more wins in their season finale against Merchant Marine Saturday afternoon. The visiting Cardinals defeated the Mariners 8-4, 10-9, and finish their regular season with a record of 25-13 overall, 6-6 in Landmark play.
In game one, the Cards found themselves tied 2-2 after seven innings of play, but finally hit their offensive stride in the top of the eighth. Taylor Stockinger hit a double that scored teammate Megan Rizzi, and Isabelle Pisini knocked another double that brought home Stockinger moments later.
Lynn Brown then blasted a home run that scored Pisini to give the visitors a 6-2 lead. The Cards took advantage of a series of errors by the Mariners, capping the inning with two unearned runs by Kristen Trancynger and Mel Gallela.
The battle continued in game two, as the evenly matched squads traded runs throughout nine innings of play. Catholic secured a 9-1 lead by the top of the fourth, but the Mariners came roaring back by scoring eight unanswered runs in the next three innings. Trancynger finally notched the game-winning run in the top of the ninth, scoring off a Mariner error midway through the inning.
Stockinger had another strong performance for the Cards, going 4-for-8 from the plate with three RBIs. Trancynger also added two RBIs in game one, while Galella garnered two in the nightcap. Stephanie Clemente walked two and struck out six in the opener, while Stacie Goddard walked four and struck out five in game two.
