CUA takes down Albion 8-2 on Friday evening
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Bolstered by a five-run third inning CUA
downed Albion 8-2 on Friday evening at the Rebel Spring
Games. Megan Rizzi went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Cardinals
and Kerri Apicella struck out six over seven innings to earn the
win for CUA.
A solo homerun by Albion in the bottom of the first put the
Britons on top 1-0 but CUA came back with five runs in the top of
the third to take a four-run lead.
Taylor Stockinger led the inning off with a single and moved to
second on a Mel Galella sacrifice bunt. Rizzi then doubled
home Stockinger to tie things at one. Following a Kristen
Trancynger single Erin McMakin singled home Rizzi and the Cardinals
had their first lead of the afternoon.
Nina Curto was next and she reached on a fielder’s choice,
which also brought in McMakin and Tracey Scanlon. Curto
eventually came around on a wild pitch to complete the five run
stanza.
Albion got one run back in its half of the third to pull within
5-2.
In the top of the sixth the Cardinals scored twice to go in front
7-2. Scanlon came home on an error and Curto scampered across
following a passed ball to account for CUA’s scoring in the
inning.
A McMakin ground out in the seventh plated Galella for CUA’s
eighth and final run.
Apicella surrendered only six hits in seven innings and allowed
just one earned run. Kaitlyn Downey took the loss for the
Britons after she allowed eight runs on six hits and walked
three.
CUA will wrap up action at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday when
the Cardinals take on Indiana Wesleyan and Roger Williams on
Saturday morning.
