Cardinals land in third in preseason conference poll
After a successful 2010 season, Catholic University has placed third in the Landmark Conference preseason poll for the 2011 season. The poll consists of votes from the seven head softball coaches and sports information directors at each institution that sponsors the sport.
According to the Landmark preseason poll Moravian is the favorite to become this year's champion with 52 points. The Greyhounds have claimed the last three titles.
Susquehanna placed second in the poll with 48 points and Catholic was third with 36 points.
Next up was Juniata College and the University of Scranton who tied for fourth place with 32 points apiece. Drew University and Merchant Marine Academy took the sixth and seventh spots with 20 and 11 points, respectively.
Catholic's 2010 season featured a 26-15 record overall and a 6-6 conference mark. Three of the Cardinals' four All-Conference selections are back, led by shortstop Megan Rizzi who ranked among the top hitters in the conference and earned first team accolades. Sophomore Taylor Stockinger and junior Tracey Scanlon were both named to the second team.
The Cardinals will open the Landmark season by traveling to Juniata on March 26th. CUA is back in action this weekend when it heads to Florida for its annual spring break trip. The Cardinals open up vs. Aurora on March 6 beginning at 11 a.m.
