CUA swimmers get winter championship season started

WASHINGTON – The winter championship season gets underway this weekend when the CUA swim teams travel to Scranton, Pa. to compete at the 2012 Landmark Conference championship.  The event will take place on the campus of conference newcomer Marywood University, beginning on Friday morning and concluding on Sunday evening.

CUA has been competing since mid-October, beginning with a pair of unscored meets vs. Division I foes American and George Washington.  The Cardinals swam until the first week of December before taking a month-long hiatus for the semester break.  On January 14, the second semester schedule began with a conference meet vs. Scranton.

The Cardinals were last in action on January 28 when they traveled to compete against Randolph-Macon.  On that day, Joanna Ladas, Julia Wisler, Chelsea Doyle, Caleb Capozella and Dominic Grillo each won their respective races, as did the women's 400 freestyle relay team.

Capozella has led the men all season, earning three Landmark Conference Male Swimmer of the Week awards, the most recent coming on January 30.

In addition to Capozella, other swimmers on the male side to keep an eye on include Grillo, Luke Granelli, Evan Hundley, Jakub Deptula, Brendan Reilly, Chris LeDonne, Paul McGee, Justin Kenyon and Steve Henderson.

On the women's side, Ladas has teamed with Wisler to give the Cardinals a terrific one-two punch that figures to score plenty of points this weekend.

Along with those two women, CUA will be well-represented by Nicole DiGiacinto, Katherine Kelly, Aubree Guidon, Laura Keehn, Gabrielle Giambagno, Ashley Wilson, Andrea Durbin and Kristen Gunn.

CUA had a terrific run through last year's conference championship, with the women finishing third and the men taking fourth.  Capozella and Ladas were both named Swimmer and Rookie of the Year for their respective genders, while Head Coach Paul Waas and his staff received the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year award.

Merchant Marine Academy took the men's crown, while Susquehanna came away with the women's title.

Below is the schedule of events for championship weekend. Complete results of each day will be available on cuacardinals.com.
