Cardinals take on St. Mary's and Marymount, prep for conference opener

ST. MARY'S, Md. – CUA competed against St. Mary's and Marymount on Friday, with both the men and women going 1-1 on the day.  The Cardinals swept Marymount, but were beaten by St. Mary's.  Individually, CUA had quite a few impressive performances, with Joanna Ladas, Liz Casper, Michelle Navaro, Caleb Capozella, and Dominic Grillo all earning first place finishes.

On the women's side, Ladas and Casper tied for first in the 1000 free, with a time of 11:03.99, while Navarro won the 200 backstroke in 2:17.84.  Ladas also won the 500 free, with a time of 5:23.81.

Navarro finished third in the 200 free, with a time of 2:03.76.

Ladas later took third in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:20.49, while Laurie Wei (2:21.42) and Rachel Berry (2:24.55) finished three-four in the 200 butterfly.

In the 100 freestyle, Julia Wisler touched in 57.08 seconds to place second, and she also finished second in the 50 free, in 25.87.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Navaro, Berry, Chelsea Doyle and Wisler took first with a time of 1:45.16. 

In the 200 yard medley relay, CUA placed second, with the quartet of Doyle, Laura Keehn, Wei and Nicole Digiacinto finishing in 2:00.03.

In men's action, Capozella won a pair of events, taking first in the 200 backstroke (1:59.92) and the 200 free (1:47.45), and Grillo took first in the 50 free (22.72).

Justin Kenyon was second in the 500 free, touching in 5:16.71, while Stephen Mooers (51.59) and Grillo (51.61) finished in third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 free.

Chris LeDonne (2:13.50) and Jakub Deptula (2:17.00) placed three-four in the 200 butterfly, while Matt Wagner took fourth in the 200 IM, posting a time of 2:07.73.

In the relay events, the foursome of Wagner, Capozella, Grillo and Stephen Gill won the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:30.20.

The Cardinals also finished second in the 200 yard medley relay, as Paul McGee, Luke Granelli, Deptula and Brendan Place posted a time of 1:48.87.

On Saturday, CUA opens its 2012-13 Landmark Conference schedule when the Cardinals travel to Towson, Md., to face Goucher.  Start time is set for 1 p.m.
