WASHINGTON - Despite venue changes, the CUA men's and women's swimming squads made history, the women's team went undefeated and the men's team split the weekend with a win over Scranton and a loss to Merchant Marine Academy.
The Cardinals began the weekend with Scranton. For the first time in school's history, both teams defeated Scranton. With a final score of 158-104, the men took first place in 11 of the 28 events, as the women took first place in eight of the 28 events for a final score of 140-122.
Matt Wagner stood out on the men's side. Wagner took first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:49.63) and 100 yard freestyle (49.10) and assisted in the first place 200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle relay. Joanna Ladas was the top performer on the women's side. Ladas captured first place finishes in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:21.94), the 200 yard freestyle (2:00.83) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:31.88), she also kicked off the 400 yard freestyle relay, which also resulted in CUA first place finish.
Catholic concluded the weekend by hosting USMMA at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. The women's team defeated the Merchants 110-84, as the men fell 121.5 -79.5. The women obtained six of 22 first place finishes, while the men captured three first place finishes.
CUA swim host its last meet on Saturday, Jan. 18 welcoming Washington & Lee and Marymount.
