Cardinals Soar Over Blue Jays for a Landmark Sweep

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men’s & women’s swimming & diving teams outperformed Elizabethtown College for two victories on Saturday afternoon. The women’s team downed the Blue Jays with a final score of 211-48 while the men collected a 189.7-70.5 triumph.

The Cardinals earned the number one spot in every event on both the men’s and women’s side to capture the landslide victories.

Freshman Caroline Beal hit the wall first in both of the backstroke events. She touched in at 1:03.42 in the 100-backstroke and 2:17.17 during the 200-backstroke. Junior Emily Messina earned a victory in the 200-butterfly (2:21.21) while senior Brooke Krajewski led the field in the 100-butterfly (1:03.90).

Senior Basira Knight swam for two individual golds in the 100-breaststoke (1:13.39) and the 100-individual medley (1:04.70). Freshman Marie Redoutey grabbed the first touch in the 200-breaststroke with a winning time of 2:45.20.

Junior Pippa Rogers won the 1000-freestyle with a finishing time of 11:46.04 and sophomore Elizabeth Spernal touched for the win during the 500-freestyle (5:41.41). Rookie Morgan James hit first in the 50-freestyle (26.05) while her classmate Katie Van Lew led the 100-freestyle in 59.40 and sophomore Kassi Grumski won the 200-freestyle (2:08.64).

In her Catholic diving debut, sophomore Mackenzie Earley topped the 1-meter (128.25) and 3-meter (107.55) events just ahead of rookie teammate Colleen O'Callaghan (123.15, 96.75).

Catholic sophomore Olivier Nguyen of the men's team, set a new school record in the 100-individual medley with a winning time of 55.46 after he took gold in the 100-backstroke (55.50) earlier in the meet.

Rookie James Verby won the distance events with a 10:28.98 finish in the 1000-freestyle and 5:06.75 time during the 500-freestyle. Junior Sam Hicks hit the wall first in the 100-freestyle (49.56) while freshman Matt Mahon won the 50-freestyle (22.59) and sophomore Kevin Jay took the 200-freestyle (1:52.97).

Mahon also earned first place points when he touched the wall in 55.81 seconds during the 100-butterfly.

Additional double winners for the men included freshmen Chris Grunbok, Greg McCarthy along with senior Joseph Soraghan. Grunbok captured a winning time of 2:19.84 in the 200-breaststroke and 1:02.97 in the 100-breaststroke. McCarthy touched in first during the 200-butterfly (2:02.13) and 200-backstroke 2:05.99 while Soraghan took both the 1-meter (189.30) and 3-meter (206.85) diving events.

The Catholic swimmers head to Goucher College to take on the Gophers at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 18. The diving squad will remain in the nation’s capital to host the Catholic University 6-Dive Invitational set for 11 a.m., on Nov. 18.
