Cardinals Open Yellow Jacket Invitational with Strong Swims

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's swimming team earned 352 points on day one of the Yellow Jacket Midseason Invitational to finish the opening session in second place. The men's team collected 314 points and sit in fourth place after the first night of competition.

The Catholic women opened the two-day invitational with a second-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay (1:39.47). Freshman Morgan James (24.78) led off the foursome followed by senior Rachel Chain (24.96), junior Rachael Zarlinski (25.36) and senior Basira Knight (24.37).

James earned her second silver of the event when she hit the wall in 24.60 seconds during the 50-freestyle. Knight (25.01) touched in behind James for a fifth-place finish while Chain (25.35) grabbed 10th place and Zarlinski (25.62) placed 13th.

Senior Madison Amann claimed a sixth-place finish in the 200-individual medley with a finishing time of 2:17.44. Freshman Molly Donnellan cracked the top-13 when she hit the wall at 2:20.35 while sophomore Emily Tighe touched for 18th place (2:21.32) and freshman Marie Redoutey earned 19th place (2:22.62).

In the women's 500-freestyle sophomore Elizabeth Spernal touched in at 5:30.77 for 17th place while junior Emily Messina hit the wall less than a second later (5:31.48) for 19th place. Sophomore Kassi Grumski rounded out the top-20 with a finishing time of 5:31.59.

For the men's team sophomore George Isaacs started off the 200-freestyle relay with a 22.26-second split. His classmates Olivier Nguyen (21.01) and Kevin Jay (21.86) swam the next two legs before freshman Matt Mahon (20.96) anchored the team and touched the wall for third place (1:26.09).

Freshman Greg McCarthy captured a second-place finish in the 200-individual medley with a time of 1:56.64. Jay grabbed 10th place when he hit the wall at 2:01.75 while senior Peter Bajorek (2:03.04) touched in for 14th place.

Fellow freshman James Verby swam the 500-freestyle in 4:54.32 for an eighth-place finish. Sophomore Luke Nicholson (4:57.59) captured 12th place and junior Sam Hicks (5:00.40) claimed 14th place.

Mahon popped a 21.93-second finish during the 50-freestyle for 11th place while Isaacs tied for 16th place in 22.26 seconds.

The Catholic swimmers look to continue to drop time on day two of the Yellow Jacket midseason invitation, Saturday, Dec. 2, beginning at 8:45 a.m.
