2000-01 Season Outlook

NCAA Championship Qualifiers 1997 John Cooper |
Head Coach Tom Calomeris believes that with many key swimmers returning and a good freshman class, another successful season is in the works. But, then again, if you were 85-22 (.794) over the past 11 seasons and had won four CAC championships and two Division III National Catholic Championships, wouldn't your expectations be high?
The Cardinals had another outstanding season in 1999-2000, posting their second undefeated season (9-0) and winning their fourth CAC championship. The team produced an outstanding third-place finish out of 18 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships, and again received the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-America Team Award.
"This year's team, with the experience of last year, should be very good," Calomeris said. "But in order for them to be outstanding, they have to have great dedication."
Leading CUA this season are seniors Steven Cartwright, Frank Delany and captain Andy Waters, along with juniors Pat Stinger and Hugh Carroll and sophomores Paul Ojeda, Jason Willis and Tim Moskalski.
Cartwright was voted CAC Swimmer of the Year after winning the 500 free, 400 IM and 200 fly at the CAC Championships. Delany captured the 100 back and was second in the 200 back, and Waters took second in the 100 and 200 breast.
Stinger repeated as champion in the 100 and 200 breast and placed second in the 200 IM at the CAC Championships. His school-record time of 2:08.55 in the 200 breast was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. He and Cartwright were team co-MVPs.
Carroll was third in the 50 free, Ojeda second in the 100 free and Willis third in the 100 and 200 back at the CAC Championships. Moskalski captured third place in the 1,650 free. Each also scored high in their other events.
The men face a demanding schedule with meets against some of the top Division III programs in the nation in Washington & Lee and Mary Washington, as well as Division I rival VMI.
