Cardinals Fall to Scranton in Landmark Meet
Jones and Miller each notch a pair of firsts

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's and women's swim teams had a tough day in the pool in their first Landmark Conference meet of 2008.  The men lost 134-128 while the women were defeated 154-105 by the University of Scranton Royals. 

The men's side had two athletes with a pair of first place finishes each.  Brian Jones (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) took the top spot in both the 200 free (1:52.52) and the 100 free (51.46), he was also second in the 500 free (5:16.97).  Joining his as a first place winner was Luke Miller (State College, Pa.) who swam to first in the 100 breast with a 1:05.25 and the 200 breast coming in at 2:24.18. 

Three other swimmers helped the Cards with points.  Brian Shelton (Annadale, N.J./North Hunterdon) had three seconds for the meet in the 100 breast (1:06.30), the 200 breast (2:28.22) and the 200 IM (2:13.89).  He was matched by Dan Finnegan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archibishop Ryan) who took second in the 100 back with a 1:0013, the 50 free swimming a 24.00 and the 200 back notching a 2:14.57.  The 200 free relay also came in first for the men in a time of 1:36.14.  It was made up of Ray Pierce (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford), Andrew Kalna (Stafford, Va./Mother of Divine Grace) , John Caldwell (Thornwood, N.Y./Iona Prep) and Jones.

Lauren Wood (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) led the way for the women with three top-two finishes.  She won the 50 free in a time of 26.61 and took second in the 100 fly with a 1:04.28 as well as the 200 IM swimming a 2:26.43.  Krystal Dole (Corbin, Ky./Model) won the 100 free for the women coming in at 58.54 and also took second in the 200 free swimming a 2:07.83.  She was matched by Lisa Brooks (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) who won the 100 breast (1:12.11) and was second in the 200 breast (2:37.40).  Katelyn Kenny (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit) added a pair of seconds with a 1:06.50 in the 100 back and a 2:22.49 in the 200 back.

The team will travel to the University of Mary Washington for a non-conference meet against a former CAC foe next Saturday.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
