Jones Wins 500 Freestyle at Landmark Meet
CUA women in third after day one
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Catholic University men's and women's swim teams were both successful Friday on day one of the Landmark Conference Championship. After one session of the three day event, the women are currently in third with 97 points while the men are in fourth with 83 points.
The highlight of the day was on the men's side as freshman Brian Jones (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) became CUA's first individual Landmark Conference champion. Jones won the 500 free in a time of 4:51.33, he had been seeded second in the event after the preliminaries. The Cardinal men had one other top three finish when the team of Brian Shelton (Annadale, N.J./North Hunterdon), Andrew Kalna (Stafford, Va./Mother of Divine Grace), Dan Finnegan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archibishop Ryan) and Jones placed third in the 200 free relay with a 1:29.74.
The women won one event in the finals as the team of Lauren Wood (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), Samantha McClellan (Union Town, Ohio/St. Thomas), Helene Nicoletti (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) and Krystal Dole (Corbin, Ky./Model) took first in the 200 free relay coming in at 1:42.03. The women had two other third place finishes on Friday. The 400 medley relay of Katelyn Kenny (Estell Manor, N.J./Holy Spirit), Lisa Brooks (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), Mary Connelly (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Wood swam a 4:12.18 while Wood was the third finisher in the 50 free with a 25.84.
After day one Scranton is leading the women with 173 points and USMMA is on top of the men's competition with 209 points.
The Cards will be back in the pool tomorrow for day two beginning with preliminary races in the morning and finals in the afternoon.
